You will be tempted to buy many different tools for cookie decorating. Especially after reading blogs and going down a rabbit hole on Instagram and YouTube! (trust me, we have all been there) But just to get started, you only need the basics. Now let us get on with the top seven necessary cookie decorating tools!
Looking for a delicious no spread sugar cookies recipe? Since you are cutting out sugar cookies, you don’t want those to spread into weird shapes. You need a cookie recipe that will hold its shape.Check out the best ever sugar cookie recipe. You will also need a royal icing recipe.
1. Adjustable Rolling Pin
Adjustable rolling pins are great because your cookies will come out all the same height. You can decide how thin or thick you want your sugar cookies to be.
2. Gel colors
I recommend starting with Americolor gel colors. You can buy a student start kit off Amazon, and it comes with typical colors you may need.
3. Cookie cutters
Cookie cutters are inexpensive. You can find 3D-printed cookie cutters online or at grocery or craft stores; there are various shapes you can buy. You don’t always need special-shaped cutters to make a beautiful set. Adding royal icing transfers or airbrushing on top of a cookie can make a batch of cookies attractive.
4. Piping Bags

I like to use disposable piping bags for easy cleanup, but there are piping bags you can wash and reuse. Ensure not to fill your piping bags over so you can have adequate piping!
5. Scribes
This tool moves the icing around and cleans up royal icing boo-boos. There are also scribes called boo boo sticks that look like little shovels so that you can scrape royal icing off the cookies. Scribes are also used pop bubbles that may form in your royal icing.
6. Spray bottle
Royal icing consistency is essential in making your cookie look fabulous. To change the royal icing consistency, powdered sugar has to be added to stiffen the icing, or water can be added to loosen it. I like to use a spray bottle filled with water to control how much water I add to the icing.
7. Deli containers
I like to use deli containers with lids because royal icing needs to be covered so it won’t get hard and form a crust on top. Also, I like to color my icing and store it in deli containers. They are perfect for storing in the refrigerator or freezer.
